Good Campus Relations
Religious literacy in these matters is likely to underpin a student (and staff) experience on campuses, which is inclusive of people from a broad range of backgrounds and provides a safe and comfortable space in which to thrive as learners, researchers and leaders. It contributes to a sense of justice, purpose, being valued and included which is the starting point for good campus relations, which depend on tolerance and understanding that are antithetical to extremism.
There may nevertheless remain those who feel alienated and hold extreme views and attitudes, some of which may be based on particular interpretations of faith and religious traditions. As 9/11 and 7/7 showed, a tiny minority may feel justified in acting with violence. While universities have on occasion found themselves to be being used as bases for students who were engaging in such extreme activities, highly religiously literate campuses are not only less likely to find themselves in this position but should also prove excellent platforms for the translation of good campus relations into wider society.
